Great Grandmother Gets Tasered

great-grandmother-gets-taseredFox News has obtained police dashboard video of the tasering of a 72 year old great grandmother in Travis County, TX.

The police claim that after Kathryn Winkfein was stopped for driving 15 miles over the speed limit in a construction zone, she disobeyed an order to sign the speeding ticker, used profane language, and became “violent.” They say the officer who tasered her and took her to be booked for resisting arrest was completely justified.

Video footage has emerged of the moment a 72-year-old great grandmother was tasered by a policeman in the United States.

The pictures from a camera on his car dashboard show the angry exchange between Kathryn Winkfein and the arresting officer in Austin, Texas.

She had been stopped for allegedly speeding on a notoriously dangerous section of Highway 71.

After completing the paperwork, the officer, Deputy Chris Bieze, returned to Winkfein's truck - but when she refused to sign the ticket a confrontation followed.

Next to the busy road, she was seen refusing to have handcuffs put on her by him.

He then warned her she was about to be hit with a Taser before the actual stun incident took place.

The woman fell to the ground - she was not seriously injured.

The Travis County officer said he was trying to get her away from the busy highway, after repeatedly telling her to back up.

The victim, from Granite Shoals, said: "I was tased here and here" but has now been told by her lawyer not to speak any more.

Deputy Bieze's boss, Sergeant Major Gary Griffin, said he had reviewed the footage and he was standing by his colleague, who he said followed policy.

Sgt. Maj. Griffin said: "He had a decision to make. He was concerned for his own safety. It was either that, or take his chances with vehicles barrelling down the road at 60mph."

The local community in Austin is divided over whether the officer was right to stun her.

One caller told radio host Jeff Ward: "Man, I can't believe this whole story. Was she threatening him or just using foul language?"

Another caller said: "Jeff, I'm laughing hysterically," while a third said: "Age is irrelevant".

A local cop tasers a 72 great-grandmother and it's all caught on camera. How dare that nasty cop!! Which is precisely the reaction you'd get if you watched the segment on this morning's CBS's "The Early Show." The program begins the video right where the police officer tasers the woman, basically ignoring everything that transpired only moments before. "The Early Show" then shows a brief snippet of an interview with the woman:

WOMAN: I wasn't argumentative, I was not combative, OK? All of this is a lie.

All contributor Russ Mitchell noted in the cop's defense was that the cop said the woman "would not cooperate" and "swore at him." The reaction from the show's hosts is, well, not very surprising after Mitchell noted that the constable's office is standing by the officer who tasered the woman:

HOST MAGGIE RODRIGUEZ: Are you kidding me?

HOST JULIE CHEN: I saw a longer piece of the tape and she said "just give me the ticket and I'll sign it." And then that happened?

It's obvious that Chen didn't view that much longer a piece of tape, else she might have come to a different conclusion. Here is a complete video of the incident via The Dallas Morning News, and it directly contradicts the 72-year old woman's claim from above that she "wasn't argumentative" and "was not combative." She at first refused to sign the speeding ticket, whereupon the officer prepared to arrest her (standard procedure) for that refusal. He asked the woman to move to the rear of her vehicle, whereupon she then agreed to sign the ticket, but with a profanity-laced response. She then attempted to push past the officer which would have put her perilously close to the highway's oncoming traffic.

The officer warned the woman that if she persisted, he would have to resort to using his taser. The woman's reply was "Go ahead -- tase me. I dare you," whereupon she said "I'm getting back into my car." She then plowed right into the officer who was in her path. It was only then that the officer resorted to his taser.

The question is: How did "The Early Show" miss all of this?

The son of a prominent KSL employee died Tuesday in Washington County after a police officer deployed a Taser when the man ran down a road in what authorities called an "agitated" state.

Brian Layton Cardall, 32, was traveling with his wife south on State Road 59 near Hurricane on Tuesday afternoon. According to KSL.com, the vehicle pulled over to the side of the road when Cardall, who recently had been struggling with mental health issues, began having an "episode."

Cardall left the car and ran down the road, and his wife called police, said Washington County Undersheriff Jake Adams. A Hurricane police officer who responded to the scene deployed a Taser on Cardall, who lost consciousness, Adams said.

Cardall was treated at the scene but he was pronounced dead after being transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St.George, Adams said.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office did not immediately release further details about the incident.

One of the defenses of the increasingly common use of tasers is that tasers are preferable to guns; after all, the argument goes, guns are more dangerous and likely to kill than tasers. Tasers are safer. Except, as Cardall's death and many other taser deaths prove, tasers are often deadly, too. As far as the 72-year-old woman is concerned, I'm sure more than a few people will be heard to say, "She can't complain. She asked for it." And she did say, "Go ahead, taser me." So she deserved what she got.

A lot of people said exactly that about the taser incident involving Andrew Meyer, which occurred while John Kerry blithely stood by and did absolutely nothing. No one else who was present did anything to stop it either. And a number of people who said Meyer got "what was coming to him" were self-identified liberals and progressives. See "Obey or Die," for the details. The final part of that essay provides several typical examples of commentary on the Meyer incident.

In an earlier essay in that "Final Descent" series, I discussed in some detail "what a taser is and what it does." By way of summary, I wrote:

In brief: tasers can kill people, or cause very serious injury; tasers are "commonly used...to gain compliance" -- from people who are usually unarmed and who pose no serious threat whatsoever; and tasers are frequently used on suspects who have already been subdued and immobilized.

Recall the police officer's complaint against the 72-year-old woman: she was "physically non-compliant." She had to be made to obey. So he tasered her -- which meant, he used torture to force her to do exactly as he demanded (if you doubt it's torture, I again direct you here), torture which easily could have seriously injured or even killed her. Thus, my title: "Obey or Die."

Let's note the broader aspects of the culture in which this common deployment of violence, torture and death occurs, all of which is utilized to ensure compliance and obedience. Bullying and violence are among the chief "virtues" embraced by the United States generally. These are among the major lessons taught to our children -- and they learn those lessons tragically well.

After itemizing some of the basic lessons imparted by our culture in "Bullied, Terrorized and Targeted for Destruction: Our Children Have Learned Well," I observed:

The greatest virtue is to feel nothing, or as close to nothing as possible. There is one exception: you can feel unreasoning, unfocused rage, and you are free to act on it. You may lash out in any direction you choose. The innocence of your victim is irrelevant.

Our government acts in this manner repeatedly. Our political leaders all applaud it, and offer a lengthy series of "justifications" for our unending national cruelty.

Our national leaders are fond of telling us that war is always "a last resort." This, of course, is a lie, one of the most terrible lies the United States regularly employs as it continues its campaigns of destruction, while it embarks on new ones. The U.S. government has repeatedly manufactured threats where none existed, often creating them out of absolutely nothing. This particular history stretches back more than a century, and it continues today with Iraq, Iran, North Korea, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and whatever country next finds itself in the crosshairs of America's imperial agenda.

And most Americans don't care all that much. How often do you hear or see mention of more than a million innocent people murdered in Iraq, a genocide of historic proportions by any minimally civilized standard? With less than a handful of exceptions, all national politicians have supported and continue to support this criminal war and the occupation of Iraq. For a couple of years, the Democrats could have defunded the barbaric occupation of Iraq; they refuse to do so, for they support this program. This also means that, in the last election, tens of millions of people, all those "good" Americans who are so noble and peace-loving, voted for a war criminal. It didn't matter whether you voted for McCain or Obama: both of them were and are war criminals. But almost no one will tell you that. And it's not just me who says so, but the Nuremberg Principles, the very principles which the United States was once largely responsible for devising and which the U.S. never hesitates to apply to everyone else, but never to itself.

Many Americans, including many of those progressive organizations that once claimed to be anti-war, today enthusiastically support the Empire's wars of aggression and domination -- now that Democrats control the machinery of death. These people were never anti-war: they were against wars run by Republicans. They're murderous, lying, hypocritical bastards. And the Obama administration regularly continues to issue threats against Iran, North Korea and anyone else who refuses to do exactly what the U.S. demands.

Very few people object. As this essay and many others attest, I unequivocally condemn the growing use of tasers. What happened to the individuals in the stories noted above, and to the dog, and to all those people and animals in many similar stories, is disgusting and unforgivable. But a great many people have very little basis for objection. Far worse crimes are committed by the U.S. government every day, and the Obama administration acts to ensure that additional crimes will be committed for years to come.

Not only do most people do nothing; they support this system of violence, cruelty and death. As I often ask: why do you offer support in this way? The overwhelming majority of people wait for someone or something else to change events that they contend are out of their control, disregarding the fact that voting for a war criminal is not the act of an innocent bystander. When one is confronted by evil of the magnitude represented by the continuing actions of the U.S. government and military, to argue that fewer murders or the better camouflaged use of torture is an "improvement," or that Obama represents a "lesser" evil, is to reveal the bankruptcy of a person without a moral compass. In addition, Obama has already demonstrated that his crimes may well equal or even surpass those of the previous administration, or those that might have been committed by McCain. And if you are willing to accept and support evil on this scale, what crimes won't you accept? Where exactly will you draw the line? When torture is openly utilized within the United States itself, on a daily basis? When torture and death visit your next-door neighbor -- or you? As these taser incidents demonstrate, we've already arrived at that point. So much for the "lesser" evil.

To wait for someone else to change events and dynamics of this kind also badly misdirects the focus from the widespread nature of the problem, and from where change must always begin. As I wrote at the conclusion of "Bullied, Terrorized and Targeted for Destruction":

Our children learn all this, and many more lessons of the same kind. Of course, they are often vicious bullies. Our government is a murderous bully on a scale that beggars description; most politicians are bullies; the majority of adults are bullies to varying degrees. Why wouldn't these children be bullies? It's what they've been taught. In the most crucial ways, it's all they've been taught.

These children are the perfect embodiments of the central values of our culture. They have learned well.

But, many people will say, this is monstrous. We must teach these children that such behavior is deeply wrong, and that they must change. To all such people, I reply: Then change yourselves. Change your values, and change the way you think and act. Children will see those changes, and their own behavior will alter accordingly in time.

Swine flu cases approach 800

swine-flu-cases-approach-800The number of swine flu cases in the UK has risen to 797.

A further 47 people in Scotland, 42 in England and one in Northern Ireland have been diagnosed with the virus, said health officials.

Meanwhile an adult patient with the H1N1 virus is recovering in intensive care in Birmingham City Hospital.

And the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that a sharp increase in cases in Australia may mean the infection has become a pandemic.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said there were currently 607 possible cases of swine flu still under investigation in UK laboratories.

The majority of new confirmed cases in Scotland - which now has a total of 311 - are in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area.

Ten people are being treated in hospital and three further healthcare workers have been confirmed, taking the total of NHS staff affected to 11.

Nineteen of the new cases in England are in the West Midlands, where four schools have been closed following outbreaks among pupils.

The HPA said on Tuesday that five schools were currently closed in England, while the Scottish government also reported five full closures.

Of the remaining new cases in England, 14 are in the North East, six are in London, two are elsewhere in the South East and one is in the East Midlands.

More than 1,200 people have contracted the virus in Australia - none fatally.

Officials from the WHO are now trying to establish whether a large-scale, community-wide outbreak has developed in the state of Victoria.

Body In The Bin Murder

body-in-the-bin-murderA man being hunted by police over the murder of a woman whose body was found dumped in a wheelie bin has made contact with officers from Malta.

Peter Wallner and his partner, Lilia Fenech, had not been seen since the badly decomposed corpse was discovered outside a house on Saturday afternoon.

The body, believed to be that of a white woman in her 30s, was found after a human foot was spotted protruding from the bin in Cobham, Surrey.

Mr Wallner had been renting and living in the semi-detached property up until about three weeks before the discovery.

A police appeal was made to trace Peter Wallner at the weekend.

The 33-year-old suspect, from Germany, has now telephoned Surrey officers.

Police said he was staying with Ms Fenech, 23, and her family in Malta when he became aware that detectives wanted to speak to him and he contacted them.

He is now making arrangements to return to the UK as soon as possible, said a spokesman for Surrey Police.

The senior investigation officer, Detective Chief Inspector Maria Woodall, said: "We appreciate the assistance of the media and the public in helping us locate Mr Wallner.

"He has now made contact with us and is keen to return to the UK to help us in our investigation.

"As he has now been located, we ask that his privacy - and that of Ms Fenech and her family - is respected."

Sky's crime correspondent Martin Brunt said: "Surrey Police don't have any officers in Malta. This is a very early part of the investigation.

"They are hoping Mr Wallner will do as he has suggested in a phone call to them and will return voluntarily to talk to them."

Brunt added: "Apparently, a source said, Mr Wallner was watching Sky News yesterday morning when he first became aware that police in Surrey wanted to talk to him."

probe-into-metropolitan-police-officers-conductSix Metropolitan Police officers have been suspended or placed on restricted duties following allegations of ill-treatment after a police raid.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the Enfield-based officers' conduct, according to Scotland Yard.

A man has claimed his head was put down a toilet which was then repeatedly flushed during a drugs raid last year.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said the allegations were "extremely serious".

The Met said the allegations raised "real concern".

But they said they could not comment on the exact nature of the complaints.

Internal investigation

The raid on which the allegations are centred took place in November last year, during which five people were arrested.

BBC crime correspondent Ben Ando said the allegations did not concern "waterboarding" techniques - previously used by the CIA to interrogate terrorism suspects - as some newspapers had earlier claimed.

Water-boarding is aimed at simulating the sensation of drowning. It involves detainees being stretched on their backs or hung upside down, with a cloth pushed in their mouth or plastic film placed over their face before water is poured onto the face.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said a police employee had raised concerns about the conduct of a number of officers, during an internal investigation into allegations of mishandling of property.

Terror Names Linked To Doomed Flight AF 447

terror-names-linked-to-doomed-flight-af-447Two passengers with names linked to Islamic terrorism were on the Air France flight which crashed with the loss of 228 lives, it has emerged.

French secret servicemen established the connection while working through the list of those who boarded the doomed Airbus in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on May 31.

Flight AF 447 crashed in the mid-Atlantic en route to Paris during a violent storm.

While it is certain there were computer malfunctions, terrorism has not been ruled out.

Soon after news of the fatal crash broke, agents working for the DGSE (Direction Générale de la Sécurité Extérieure), the French equivalent of MI6, were dispatched to Brazil.

It was there that they established that two names on the passenger list are also on highly-classified documents listing the names of radical Muslims considered a threat to the French Republic.

A source working for the French security services told Paris weekly L'Express that the link was "highly significant".

Agents are now trying to establish dates of birth for the two dead passengers, and family connections.

There is a possibility the name similarities are simply a "macabre coincidence", the source added, but the revelation is still being "taken very seriously".

France has received numerous threats from Islamic terrorist groups in recent months, especially since French troops were sent to fight in Afghanistan.

Security chiefs have been particularly worried about airborne suicide attacks similar to the ones on the US on September 11, 2001.

MPs reject early election motion

mps-reject-early-election-motionA motion to dissolve Parliament and pave the way for an immediate general election has been rejected by MPs.

Plaid Cymru and the SNP tabled the motion - backed by the Conservatives and Lib Dems - saying that the government had lost authority.

SNP Westminster leader Angus Robertson called for an "historic, reforming election" to rebuild trust in politics in the wake of the expenses scandals.

But Welsh Secretary Peter Hain said an early poll would "trigger instability".

The motion was rejected by 340 votes to 268.

'Political crisis'

The debate was scheduled before last week's conflict within Labour over Gordon Brown's leadership.

But the SNP said the events of recent days showed Mr Brown had "lost his grip" and reinforced the need for a general election straight away.

Mr Robertson told the Commons that arguments against dissolution were motivated by "pure naked self preservation" on the part of the Labour Party, which performed badly in the local and European elections.

Parliament was in disrepute due to the actions of certain MPs, he said, and the public should have the opportunity to pass judgement on them.

He added that an election would allow all parties to put their proposals for cleaning up Parliament to the electorate and "the reform process will then have a mandate."

Mr Robertson added that the argument against having an election in tough economic times was simply "not credible".

"We need an election to rebuild confidence in UK economic policy," he said.

For the Conservatives, Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague said the choice was between a "visibly divided government" or a new parliament with a "mandate approved by the people of the country and the authority that comes from demonstrable public approval in a democracy".

He called for "the people of Britain to decide their own future", adding: "That is what the country wants, that it what our democracy needs."

Lib Dem MP David Heath said the "collapse in respect" for MPs made the need for an election urgent.

"We need to give the public an opportunity to back or sack every single one of us," he said.

But Labour MPs dismissed calls for an immediate election, saying reforming Parliament must be a priority and any changes agreed will be put to the electorate soon anyway as an election must be held within the next year.

Mr Hain said the SNP and Plaid were "the Tories' little helpers" in light of Conservative leader David Cameron's calls for an immediate poll.

He added that all politicians had been sent a message at the European elections to "clean up, shape up, and come back to us when the problem is fixed".

Labour MPs who wanted to replace Gordon Brown were warned by loyalists that such a move would lead to an immediate election, at a time when Labour has just suffered its worst national poll result in 90 years.

Nursery Worker Charged With Sexual Assault At Laira

nursery-worker-charged-with -sexual-assault-at-lairaA nursery worker has been charged with sexual assault and the distribution of indecent images of children.

Vanessa George, 39, was arrested on Monday after police swooped on her home in Efford, Plymouth, and at the Little Ted's nursery.

She has now been charged with seven offences including sexual assault and making and distributing indecent images of children.

Acting Det Chief Supt Russ Middleton of Devon and Cornwall Constabulary told Sky News of the scale of the inquiry.

"We have specially trained officers looking at the images and there are a large number of images and many, many more can be identified.

"We have seized evidence and there will be more invest to carry on over the coming days and weeks."

The detective confirmed a cameraphone with undated photos was central to the investigation but admitted that additional equipment now needs examination.

No children have yet been identified and some photos are of torsos, making identification difficult.

Police revealed that images discovered range from Level 1 to Level 4 - only one level below the most serious classification.

"The starting point is a camera but we also have things such as computer and laptops to examine, but I do not want to go into details," he told Sky News.

Little Ted's, which caters for children from around 95 families.

Local authorities are helping with the relocation of day-care facilities for children elsewhere in Plymouth.

Police confirmed their investigation was focused on the alleged exchange of material between George and Colin Blanchard, 38, from Littleborough, near Rochdale.

Blanchard was yesterday charged with possession and distribution of indecent images, some of which they believe were taken at an undisclosed location within Little Ted's nursery in Laira.

Bromwen Lacey, Director of Services for Children andYoung People at Plymouth City Council, revealed that social services have cranked up facilities for both children and families of those at Little Ted's.

Plymouth nursery woman charged with child abuse and porn

NURSERY worker Vanessa George has been charged with child abuse and child pornography offences.

This afternoon, Vanessa George, 39, from Efford, Plymouth, who worked at Little Ted's nursery in Laira, has been charged with seven offences.

George has been charged with two counts of sexual assault by penetration, two counts of sexual assault by touching, and one count each of making, possessing and distributing indecent images of children.

Police said none of the children involved had yet been identified, but they said some of the images so far examined appear to have been taken in the nursery.

They said some of the children may never be identified as the process is 'very difficult and painstaking'. They revealed some of the images featured children's torsos rather than faces.

George remains in custody at Charles Cross Police Station in Plymouth and will be detained to appear before Plymouth Magistrates Court tomorrow.

At a press conference this afternoon it was announced that all parents at the nursery had been spoken to or visited by social workers.

Support and counselling is being offered by Plymouth City Council and NHS Plymouth with a special phoneline providing access to healthcare professional, educational psychologist, social workers and others.

Police revealed they are examining a number of images found on devices including a mobile phone. They said it was unclear over what period the images had been taken.

George has worked at the nursery for three years.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed their investigation was focused on the alleged exchange of material between George and Colin Blanchard, 38, from Littleborough, near Rochdale.

Blanchard was yesterday charged with possession and distribution of indecent images.

Senior officers told the press this afternoon that they were currently looking at a “small number” of images on a camera phone, some of which they believed were taken inside the Little Ted’s nursery in Laira, Plymouth.

Plymouth City Council director of children and young people's services Bronwyn Lacey said 95 to 100 parent had been spoken to, and she praised their 'measured' response to the 'shocking' news.

Police continue to speak to staff at the Little Ted’s Child Day Care Unit and parents of children at the centre.

Around 100 people attended a meeting last night, Tuesday, June 9, at the St Paul’s Church in Plymouth where Plymouth District Commander Chief Superintendent Jim Webster spoke to parents and those associated with the nursery along with Plymouth City Council’s Director of Children and Young People’s Services, Bronwyn Lacey .

Ch Supt Webster said: “We continue to talk extensively with members of our community who are naturally concerned about these charges.

“Last night’s meeting was well attended by those people associated with the nursery and we took the opportunity to allay their fears where possible and also further the police investigation into the allegations.

“We will continue to liaise with local groups and people associated with the nursery and are committed with our partners to update concerned and interested parties at the earliest opportunity.”

Sky News correspondent Katie Stallard said George had been a child care worker since at least 1998, and had been at Little Teds for the last two years.

Chief Superintendent Jim Webster, head of Plymouth police, said George was suspected of being "concerned in the distribution of child pornography images".

"Of course, it is a concern to all of us that she worked in a nursery," he said.

"Our work today is to find out what has happened, where the images have come from, where they have been sent to, and any risk to anybody in Plymouth."

Little Teds operates from Laira Green Primary School and Laira United Church Hall.

Children in the nursery are aged between two and five but youngsters up to 11 can attend breakfast and after-school clubs.

Both units will remain closed for the time being, police said.

The force also confirmed that their investigation was focused on the church site which looks after the youngest group of babies and toddlers.

Worried parents dropping children off at the nursery on Tuesday were handed letters explaining that a staff member has been arrested and it was closed.

One parent, whose three-year-old boy attends the nursery, told the Plymouth Herald: "I feel sick. I can't believe this. I am never ever bringing my son back - not in a million years."

Two Shot in U.S. Holocaust Museum

two-shot-in-u.s.-holocaust-museumTwo people have been injured after a shooting at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC, police have said.

They said a man walked into the building with a "long gun" and then opened fire.

Security guards then fired back. A guard and the attacker were both shot in the incident, officers added.

They have been taken to George Washington hospital.

The extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

The suspect is now in custody and the museum has been evacuated.

It is not yet known if the attacker's weapon was a rifle or a shotgun.

One witness called Anya, who was in the museum lobby at the time, said: "We heard a huge boom and then a few consecutive shots after that.

"We all hit the ground and definitely knew it was gunshots. We all just ducked wherever we could."

The 21-year-old told Fox News: "I happened to be in a doorway and we all hid behind any area we could find.

"I was actually with two little girls who just started crying."

Stephanie Geraghty, 28, who had also been visiting the museum, said the attacker appeared to be a white male carrying a silver gun.

She said: "I heard the first shot, it sounded like something had been dropped from the upper stories down.

"The next two came really fast - bam bam. At that point everyone took off, chaos, running."

The museum normally has a heavy security presence with guards positioned both inside and outside.

All visitors are required to pass through metal detectors at the entrance, and bags are screened.

The building, located just off the National Mall near the Washington Monument, is a popular tourist attraction.

It draws about 1.7 million visitors each year. Roads surrounding the museum have been closed.

Another Islamic terror attack? Another "sudden Jihad syndrome" by a lone wolf Muslim? I will be following this latest attack on Jewry in America.

The Jihad HAS hit the streets in America, but the administration will not call it that.

The question is, will Obama ignore this as he did the shooting of a soldier last week by a pious Muslim?

Will this be brushed off as the actions of the "mentally ill" as is usually the case with Jihadi attacks?

Two men were injured in a shooting at the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington today. The attack took place at a security check point just inside the museum, and early indications were that a security guard and the gunman, who wielded a shotgun, were injured. Other security officials quickly evacuated the building. The motivation for the attack is unclear. The shooting comes just days after Barack Obama visited the site of the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany alongside Angela Merkel and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. A Washington fire department official said a third man had been injured by broken glass. Tourists who were inside the museum during the attack reported hearing shots and said they were swiftly hustled out of the building. “It was definitely a security guard,” a young woman told CNN about one of the victims. “He was down, bleeding on the floor.

U.S. Park Police Sgt. David Schlosser said the gunman walked into the museum with what he described as a "long gun." The gunman and a security guard were shot. Both were taken to the hospital, but the extent of their injuries wasn't immediately known.

U.S. Park Police initially gave slightly different information, saying three people had been shot. Fire department spokesman Alan Etter told CNN a third person was hurt after being cut by broken glass. Several witnesses said they saw the security guard on the floor and bleeding.

The museum normally has a heavy security presence with guards positioned both inside and outside. All visitors are required to pass through metal detectors at the entrance, and bags are screened.

Schlosser said park police SWAT teams were doing a secondary sweep of the building, but they didn't believe there was another gunman.

The museum, located just off the National Mall near the Washington Monument, is a popular tourist attraction. It draws about 1.7 million visitors each year.

Roads surrounding the museum have been closed and blocked off with yellow tape. Several police cars and officers on horses surround the area.

Mark Lippert of Lasalle, Ill., said he was at the museum when he heard several loud pops and saw several schoolchildren running toward him, three with horrified looks on their faces.

Update 11:41: Okay, now that we have a shooter ID, I'm going to run down my coverage. He's a nasty nut job. Real piece of work. They get them there at the Holocaust Museum occasionally. I had to deal with one, thankfully peaceable, Holocaust denier in my brief time there.

Do be careful of the initial biographical reports from the press. It's all parroted from some unreliable open-source data, and I wouldn't believe it without independent confirmation.

Update 11:34: Fox is reporting a shooter name. I'm going to avoid the details--the press will have it all soon, no doubt. But it looks like it was a white-supremacist anti-Semite. Sick bastard.

Update 11:24: I can't overstate how secure this museum is. After 9/11, it was the only site in DC that didn't increase its security measures. It was already at post-9/11 levels.

Update 11:13: FNC reports that staffers on the fifth floor are still in place. This makes sense, because there is no easy way to get up there without a pass. However their speculation that visitors may have been evacuated to the adjacent office building is very unlikely. There's security screening there, too.

Update 11:01: More about museum security. The museum's senior security people are all very serious guys. Ex-Secret Service and Army Special Forces. Always armed, and always vigilant.

The CNN guy was interviewing a witness, and there was a man in a burgundy-blazer, the mark of a visitor services staffer, in the background. Obviously knew better than to talk to the press.

Breaking news 10:51: from Washington, D.C. Shots fired at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

I used to be on the museum's visitor services staff. Reports are that a single shooter entered the building and opened fire, hitting a security officer before being shot.

Here's what I know from personal experience:

The Holocaust Museum is a fabulously secure place. The shooter could not have gone any further than two or three steps inside the building before opening fire. There are only two entrances, and the shooter entered on the east side. There is very little space before you have to go through magnetometers and x-ray machines. There was no chance of getting a firearm through there, so the wounded security officer was almost certainly manning the security checkpoint.

I wouldn't credit any early reports on the number of shots. The building is cement and brick, with high ceilings. One witness on CNN is saying that the shots were fired from an upper floor. That is wildly implausible unless the witnesses were down on the basement level, hearing the shots from the ground floor.

There are a lot of people on the roof of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing next door. There are often people up there, but more than usual today. Snipers, no doubt.

Police are saying the gunman had a long gun. A rifle would be a sign of an ill-considered attack. A shotgun would be much more appropriate for an attack on the museum, and would more likely indicate a well-planned attack.

CNN witness is adamant that she had tickets for the museum for 1:15 specifically. Classic.

There is discussion of a "suspicious package." With a evacuation like that, there will be dozens of "suspicious packages," i.e., any unattended object, camera-sized or larger, in or near the museum.

A dark day for The Burgundy
